You are expecting a child shortly and are absolutely certain that you want to breastfeed. However, you will not be available for lactation at all times.

You’re here because you’re looking for a breast pump that will allow you to store and save breast milk. However, you are uncertain of how to locate the best option.

Here are five considerations when purchasing a breast pump.

    1. Type

There are generally two types of breast pumps: manual breast pumps and electric breast pumps. Before making any purchases, you must determine which variety of breast pumps would best suit your needs.

Manual pumps are cheaper. Nonetheless, they are not quite as functional. They require manual fulcrum manipulation but ultimately serve the same function as electric pumps.

Those with leisure on their hands should opt for a manual pump. Consequently, if you remain home with your infant, you could probably get by with a manual pump.

Note, however, that the mother must already have a milk supply for a manual pump to be consistently effective. If you’re having trouble producing milk, a manual pump is probably not for you.

Electric pumps are more expensive but significantly more efficient. They function quicker and are more effective at stimulating a milk supply. They also free up your hands so you can focus on other tasks. When caring for a neonate, every spare hand is valuable.

    2. Suction

Suction ability is one of the most essential features of any breast pump. The more vacuum a breast pump has, the more quickly and efficiently it will extract milk from your breast. In addition, breast pumps with high vacuum can help alleviate breast milk blockages.

Most electric pumps feature variable suction levels. Their gauges are adjustable to accommodate various levels.

Typically, manual pumps are only capable of one level of suction. Therefore, if you intend to purchase a manual pump, you should ensure that its suction is sufficient.

    3. Comfort

Additionally, you must consider the level of comfort. You want the breast pump containers to rest comfortably against your breasts. If you do not choose your receptacles carefully, you may experience discomfort and chafing.

A single session of pounding could last up to 30 minutes. That’s 30 minutes of continuous contact with the receptacles of the pump. Therefore, if they are unsuitable, you can guarantee you will have a terrible time.

    4. Portability

Portability in a breast pump is another essential factor to consider. Numerous breast pumps are not portable. You must remain still while they function because they must be inserted into walls.

Thankfully, there are portable breast pumps on the market, not just manual models. There are battery-powered electric portable breast pumps capable of pumping for you while you move about.

The decision is entirely up to you. But if you desire maximum functionality, you should choose a portable breast pump option.

    5. Lifetime

The longevity of a breast pump is the last factor to consider when selecting one. You don’t want to spend money on a breast pump that fails within a few months of initial use. In fact, if you intend to have multiple children, you will need something that will endure for many years.

Now, how do you determine the lifespan of a pump? The best course of action is to peruse customer evaluations. These should give you a general indication of how long each pump will run.
