It has never been more important to disinfect and sterilise your home and office spaces heading into this year’s flu season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Keeping spaces and surfaces clean is the first line of defence.

The home doctor experts from House Call Doctor have these tips for sanitising your home and office.

What areas should I focus on?

Think about items and surfaces that are touched the most.

In your home, these items can include:

    • Your phone and computer
    • TV remote
    • Table surfaces
    • Bathroom
    • Toys
    • Sheets, blankets and towels
    • Door handles
    • Light switches
    • Pet dishes.

In your office space, these items can include:

    • Your phone and computer
    • Keyboards and computer mouse
    • Headphones
    • Stationary
    • Communal areas
    • Staplers and tape dispensers
    • Door handles
    • Chairs and desk surfaces.

    How to disinfect surfaces effectively

Use an antibacterial cleaner to wipe down items and surfaces. You can use antibacterial wipes that have no harsh chemicals to clean most surfaces, or for hard surfaces, you can also use a solution of half bleach to three to four litres of water. Wipe surfaces so it remains visibly wet for four minutes and then let it dry. Be mindful not to spread germs unintentionally by not cleaning your cloth before re-using on another surface.

    Safe disinfecting methods

Here are some options if you want to avoid using any harsh chemicals:

    • Vinegar: This is an all-natural disinfectant which is used to kill mould and can clean glass and stainless steel without leaving streaks.
    • Tea Tree Oil: This is an essential oil which is a natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic. When mixed with water, it can effectively clean countertops and tiles.
    • Hydrogen Peroxide: This is a natural product that can be used with vinegar to remove stains.
    • Baking Soda: Combined with water or vinegar, baking soda can be an effective cleaner.
